Dapitan City Streets – With various floats depicting Dr. Jose P. Rizal as a universal man and as a man of many-splendor things, a grand parade of floats representing different agencies, organizations, districts and municipalities around the province of Zamboanga del Norte colored the annual celebration of flashing back on past stories and lives of Dapitan City leading to the formal opening of the 2nd Handuraw 2007 last December 27, 10:00 a.m.
Eight artistic Rizal–oriented floats highlighted and participated in the said competition which truly painted the streets of the Shrine City with colorful history.
Judging 40% for relevance, 15 % for originality, 15% for craftsmanship, 15% for artistry and 15% for over- all appeal, float number three from Dr. Jose Rizal District Memorial Hospital, which illustrated Rizal as a doctor and underscored with falls, Casa Redonda and Rizal’s house, was announced the first place in the said float competition. It was succeeded by the float entry of Barangay Talisay, second place, which truly represented Rizal as a sportsman while Potungan District’s float entry was declared third place displaying the hero as a versatile painter.
Other floats which participated the aforementioned competition were the Municipality of Sibutad depicting Rizal as a teacher in Dapitan, Gloria de Dapitan and Dakak Beach Park and Resort portraying the national hero as a great lover, Municipality of Leon B. Postigo portraying Rizal as a fisherman with its entry stressed with fishnets and boat, City Agriculture Office of Dapitan showing Rizal as an environmentalist and the Municipality of Manukan exemplifying Rizal as a writer.
The said opening parade of floats was joined by the different bands and drum and lyre corps of the different schools and institutions of the province, namely; Aseniero Drum and Lyre Corp, Palomares Band, Dapitan City National High School (DCNHS) Band, Rizal Memorial Institute (RMI) Drum and Lyre Corp, ZANORTE Executive Band, Dapitan City Executive Band and Jose Rizal Memorial State College (JRMSC) Drum Corp.
Public officials and employees of the city also graced the parade together with the various private and public agencies and organizations such as the Rotary Club of Dapitan, Philippine Jaycees, PHILCOA, JRMSC Faculty and Staff, Philippine Sports Authority, Kababayin-ang Rizalista, Knights of Rizal, Shrine City Hotel Restaurant, Gloria de Dapitan, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s), Local Councils of Women, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Perpektong Gobierno Ispiritual or God’s Kingdom.
Truly, the annual celebration of "Handuraw" preserves and commemorates the rich past of Dapitan’s history carrying on the legacies of the national hero that have engraved the sea-side town of Dapitan to be put into the chronicles of Philippine history.
