You shall see the smiles painted in the Subanens’ happy faces because they have already known that such event is the beginning of their pleasure – the start of a fresh hope for a new horizon in life.
This was the scenario during the Gawad Kalinga Ground Breaking Ceremony granting 30 houses from ANCOP Vancouver Canada to our Subano Brothers in the Campo Subano located in Buenasuerte, Mutia, Zamboanga del Norte (ZN) on August 11, 2007, 9:00 in the morning.
Gawad Kalinga (GK) is a program of the Couples for Christ in coordination with the Local Government Unit of Mutia, ANCOP Vancouver Canada, CFC- Zanorte and Jose Rizal Memorial State College (JRMSC) that aims to provide shelter, education, livelihood, health and the formation of values among Subanens.
The GK Ground Breaking Ceremony started with the singing of the Philippine National Anthem and doxology which was led by Dr. Narcisa S. Bureros, Dean of JRMSC – CED and Bro. Dado Cagbabanua & CFC Singing Ministry respectively. It was officially opened by a welcome address from Hon. Bienvenido P. Pañosa, Barangay Captain of Buenasuerte, Mutia, ZN.
This was followed by the blessing of the cornerstone headed by Rev. Fr. Wilson Lagare, Parish Priest of the Municipality of Mutia, ZN and the laying of the covenant capsule directed by the Heads of the Partner Agencies.
On the other hand, a short ritual “Padugo” was done led by the Subanen Chieftain – Timoay Jose Gumondas.
Afterwards, Hon. Melba Tenorio, Municipal Mayor of Mutia, ZN; Engr. Vigilus Credo, the Provincial GK Head; Engr. Judy Bentoy, the Regional GK head; Dr. Evelyn R. Campiseño, Vice President for Planning, Research, and Extension in JRMSC and Rev. Fr.Wilson Lagare delivered their words of commitment, promising dedication and enthusiasm giving full support to the said program.
The ceremony was concluded with the words of thanks and closing prayer of Bro. Ferdinand Guirgio, CFC Provincial Area Director.
The said activity was participated in by the Couples for Christ of Zanorte, the Municipal and Barangay Officials, Faculty and Students of JRMSC, Parishioners and the Subanen GK Beneficiaries.

In realizing one of the program of the Gawad Kalinga (GK) which is education, the Province of Zamboanga del Norte (ZN), the Provincial Social Work and Development (PSWDO) and Jose Rizal Memorial State College (JRMSC) – College of Education (CED) handed over the school supplies and school bags to Subanen children, highlighting the Gawad Kalinga Ground Breaking Ceremony.
On the initial stage of the Hand-Over Proper, Hon. Seth Frederick P. Jalosjos, Board Member of the 1st District of ZDN delivered his message assuring his full support in uplifting of the lives the Subanen children through education.
Subsequently, Ms. Grace Marylen B. Sabal, Assistant Department Head and the Officer In-Charge of the Provincial Social Work and Development Office (PSMDO) gave the overview about the program of the PSWDO.
This was followed by the formal distribution of the school bags and school supplies sponsored by Hon. Rolando E. Yebes, Governor of the Province of Zamboanga del Norte and Board Member Jalosjos.
