Dapitan City celebrates 2nd Handuraw

DaPITAN CITY PLAZA -Hundreds of Dapitanons and visitors coming from the different places of the Philippines gathered as the Local Government of the Shrine City of the Philippines, with the traditional cooperaton of Jose Rizal Memorial State College (JRMSC) System, reminisced for the second time the city’s splendid history celebrating the 2nd Handuraw on December 27 - 30, 2007 in commemoration of Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s stay in Dapitan as an exile. Handuraw, a Cebuano word which means "flashback" was typically cored on our national hero’s life and martyrdom.

After the parade of floats representing the different participating government offices, barangays, agencies, districts and municipalities, the participants directly headed to the City Square for the formal opening of the second Handuraw.

A doxology with the singing of the Philippine National Anthem spearheaded by the Shrine City Band started the affair.

City Vice Mayor Hon. Patri "Jing" Bajamunde Chan delivered her welcome address. Afterwhich followed an instrumental intermission by the Shrine City Band.

Mr. Bernardo Gregorio, the Assistant Regional Director of the Department of Tourism (DOT) - Satelite Office, Dapitan City introduced the guest speaker who consequently gave his keynote address.

The speech of the guest - Hon. Ricardo A. San Juan, the Regional Director of DOT - IX stationed in Zamboanga City then followed. Having attained Master in Public Administration at the Ateneo de Zamboanga, partaken several management training programs and promotions and currently installed regional director of the DOT - IX, Mr. San Juan’s speech was centered on the focal theme of the celebration. He stressed on how Dapitan gradually evolved into the heights it enjoys now. Further, he expressed his gratitude for having been a part of the auspicious festivity.

Afterwards, the contestants for Mutya sa Handuraw 07 were then showcased to the spectators representing respective government and non-government agencies.

The traditional releasing of balloons was then given way through the leadership of City Vice Mayor "Jing" Chan and Hon. Councilor Apple Marie A. Agolong.

Dr. Julianel A. Potoy, Campus Administrator of JRMS, Main Campus and Mr. Christopher E. Rollo, National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Committee on Visual Arts - Head and the Chairman of the Board of Judges for the Float Competition enumerated the guidelines, criteria and mechanics of the tilt and announced the winners, correspondingly.

The opening program was concluded with the closing remarks of Hon. Agolong, Dapitan City Chairwoman on the Committee of Tourism.
