Dapitan City holds 2nd Handuraw Street Dancing, Showdown Contests


To feature the colorful history and culture of the Shrine City of the Philippines before and after Dr. Jose P. Rizal arrived in Dapitan City, the Local Government of Dapitan City with the Jose Rizal Memorial State College (JRMSC) System again held the 2nd Handuraw Street Dancing and Showdown Competitions at the Shrine City Plaza on December 29, the last day of the 2nd Handuraw celebration.

The JRMSC Lundayan Choristers led the doxology followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem.
Subsequently, Dapitan City Vice Mayor Patri "Jing" Chan delivered her welcome address in behalf of Mayor Dominador G. Jalosjos, Jr.

Then, Dr. Julianel A. Potoy, JRMSC Main Campus Administrator, read the mechanics and criteria of the competition. Following the guidelines, Dr. Potoy said that the competition was open to all interested municipalities, cities and agencies throughout the Philippines that would definitely depict the theme and concept chosen by the committee.

The competitors in the final showdown were judged by the panel of adjudicators, who were introduced by Jay D. Telen, according to relevance to the concept/theme and originality (40%), costume/props (20%), mastery and choreography (30%) and audience appeal (10%). Sixty per cent of the total points in the showdown competition and 40% from the street dancing will constitute the final judgment.

The champion in the final showdown was awarded P75, 000.00 and a trophy, P50, 000.00 and a trophy to the first runner-up winner and P35, 000.00 and a trophy to the second-runner up winner.

The contingents who won as the Best in Street Dancing, Best in Costume and Best in Choreography awards got a P5, 00.00 cash.

The contest proper proceeded followed by the announcement of winners and distribution of prizes spearheaded by Hon. Vice Mayor Chan, Mr. Rodiolan S. Porlas, Dapitan City Tourism Division Officer and Dr. Edgar S. Balbuena, JRMSC System President.

Janet Grace R. Sarzuelo was the lady of the ceremonies.
