MisOcc NHS seizes Chorale Tilt 1st place slot; ZaNorte NHS beats MisOcc in Rondalla Contest


Dapitan City Cultural and Sports Center - With the traditional cooperation of the City Government of Dapitan, Heritage Dapitan and Jose Rizal Memorial State College (JRMSC) System, the first ever Chorale and Rondalla Competition 2007 was made as one of the highlights of the Second Handuraw at 8:00 p.m. of December 28, 2007.

The multicolored performers of the Misamis Occidental National High School (MisOcc) brought home the bacon in Chorale Competition rising against the three equally competitive performances of the Katipunan National High School which bagged the second place, the Zamboanga del Norte National High School (ZaNorte NHS) as the third place and Sicayab National High School which received the consolation prize.

While the MisOcc NHS got their taste of victory in the chorale division, the ZaNorte NHS triumphantly dominated the first slot for Rondalla Competition leaving the MisOcc NHS in second place.

The victors for first place were awarded a cash prize of P20, 000.00 with a trophy, the second place with P15,000.00 plus a trophy, the third with P10, 000.00 and a trophy and a consolation prize of P5, 000.00, respectively.

The competition commenced with a doxology and the singing of the Philippine National anthem which was followed by an address delivered by Dapitan City Councilor Artemio Nielo in behalf of Dapitan City Mayor Dominador Garcia Jalosjos. He expressed immeasurable pleasure for having been given the opportunity to be a part of a group that sings the language of the soul which he infers as the music.

The contest was open to all secondary schools, both public and private. It was a free registration competition and the accepted performers were bona fide high school students of the participating schools.

The contestants for Chorale Competition were directed to have any choreographed Christmas song for the warm-up round and the contest piece "Sa Ganda ng Himig ng Bunga ng Tula (SAB) which was chosen by the organizing committee as the second song to be rendered by all the participants.

The pannel of judges was composed of highly venerated musical masters who were both known nationally and internationally together with the Heritage Dapitan Executive Director Dr. Eva Moncada.

The decision of the panel of adjudicators for Chorale Showdown was purely based on the overruling mechanics and criteria which break down as follows: technique composed of posture which is 10%; attacks which is 10%; tone production with 10%; musical articulation 5% and another 5% for diction substantially summing to 40% of the overall score.Another 40% is appropriated for musicality which involves phrasing with 10%, dynamics10% and ensemble with another 10%. 20% is allocated for deportment which consists confidence 10% and another 10% for stage discipline for a total of 100%.

For the Rondalla Competition the warm-up piece was any Christmas-inspired song which may either in English or Filipino.

The contest piece duly chosen by the organizing committee was the famous "Zamboanga". The criteria for judging were as follows: technique with 40% is broken down into posture with 10%, attacks 10%, tone production 10% and articulation with another 10%. Another 40% is provided for musicality which comprises phrasing 10 %, dynamics 10% and ensemble with 10%. Lastly, deportment is given 20% with confidence of 10% and stage discipline another 10% all equivalent to 100%.

Four participants vied for the Chorale Competition while only two contingents struggled for the second phase of the tilt which was the Rondalla Competition.

Professor Jay D. Telen, Director for Scholarships and Research of JRMSC Main Campus and Chairman of the Chorale and Rondalla Competition 2007 emceed the contest.
